Full of Hopes and Dreams on Parade Night

Dear Whoever broke into Gluttony on Sunday night and stole my projector.
You are an awful person.
How dare you think you have the right to take something so clearly not yours? It was bolted to the roof. You brought tools. You brought a ladder. This was not done on a whim. it was a pre-meditated criminal act. Perhaps you thought it belonged to the venue and you wanted to settle a gripe. Perhaps you saw it during the season and waited for your chance. Perhaps you don’t care who it belongs to and just think you deserve it. Whatever reason you took it, you had no right to. I want to let you know the repercussions of your actions. The show cost me $4000 to put on. I sold only $1800 worth of tickets. That means putting on the show has cost me $2200. And with the projector stolen, I am now liable for another $2000. I’m not sure if that’s a lot of money in your life, but it’s certainly a lot for me, And I haven’t finished the show so I don’t have a choice. I am forced to buy another projector before I go and do the show in the Melbourne Comedy Festival in 2 weeks or be forced to cancel shows. I’m not a wealthy person. I plan to marry my fiancé this year and currently have $600 in the bank. Any money made during the festival was to go to giving her a nice wedding and to start our life together. I was already disappointed that I had worked my butt off for a month and lost money. And then you came along. I hope you feel terrible, but I have no idea how you feel. I cannot imagine what type of person does something like this. Someone who just takes something, expensive or otherwise, without considering that their actions will cause other people suffering. I don’t know you at all. We have nothing in common. If anyone knows anything about this, please contact me at jason@jasonchong.com.au Do it from a fake hotmail account, I don’t care, I’d just like to not have to double my losses because someone decided they want something of mine that was in no way theirs. To everyone else, please share this post so that it has a greater chance of reaching the scum that needs to read it.

It’s a fond memory already while standing in the now empty space that the Fringe Club occupied, I could still clearly see the crowds of people and hear the music as an echo in my head, I looked down at the small amounts of discarded rubbish that made it through the gaps and accumulated over three weeks, the club and all it’s trimmings are leaving to the store room, there is a consolation prize, there was a Go Pro Camera on site and has been taking one photo every minute and as of Thursday will be five weeks of footage collected, I’m looking forward to that and with the photo footage I have collected it will make for some great viewing over the next week or so.

I was extremely lucky to be invited to an extra performance of Robinson Crusoe, Damian Callinan had performed his show for two weeks of the Adelaide Fringe Festival in The Tuxedo Cat – Cat Bowl room, I had bumped into Damian at the Tuxedo Cat but was unable to see his show due to other commitments, I was however so lucky when invited to the private performance and snapped off a couple of photos, not sure what the etiquette is for a friends lounge, during a performance and everyone can hear the camera taking 20-30 photos at a time lol :p

This is a well thought out show, I could feel the loneliness of a boy trapped in his garage surrounded by darkness and how frightening this must have felt, passing the time away with drifting thoughts of childhood kept safe in a journal read in the here now of his adventures and games that now us the audience were playing, great big and long applause for Damian, I would like to see more lounge room theatre in the future, this is a great way to wind up a fringe and is the essence of what the fringe is all about. A great big Thank You to Emma Anderson and Craig Harrison for hosting the night in their lounge room/kitchen and to the thirty six guests that made this feel like I was going to a ticketed show and again to Craig for being the technician who was sharp with cues with little more than ten minutes to learn the show, great work Craig and great work Damian.

Thankfully the Fringe brings acts from all over the world, in particular and of interest to me, a number of very talented comedians.  The pleasure in lining up weeks of comedy gigs comes in January where I spend days scheduling shows into a full calendar and wistfully thinking of the last Fringe, hoping the comics can bring the same standard as the year before. And they always do, which makes fitting shows in harder and harder as the years go by. There is nothing quite like seeing your favourite comedian walking down the street, or having dinner with a fellow comic – something only the small town of Adelaide can provide. Similar to this is the discovery of a brilliant young comedian, buried away in a tiny venue struggling to make people aware of their existence.

This year another fantastic cohort of comedians travelled into our town, including Mark Watson and David O’Doherty, Mike Wilmot and Paul Foot and even Fringe regulars Sammy J and Randy and Adelaide man Sam Simmons returned for another successful year. Some did a single show, a few stayed for a week but the real stars stayed for the whole month, performing show after show for the appreciative audiences. Reviewing shows this year was a real pleasure, finally a reason behind the madness I experience throughout the month. Some acts reached expectations, some bombed but the true reason for enjoying stand-up is when a comedian goes beyond anything I could possibly imagine from them. After another fantastic run of packed-out shows Sammy J and Randy have won my vote for top show of 2012, after previous years of ridiculous success both here in Adelaide and across the international comedy festivals, Sammy J and Heath McIver have stunned me yet again with a cleverly arranged show that really just leaves everyone feeling like Australia can actually produce something – even if one of the artists has to hide behind a purple puppet. Coming second was Sam Simmons, a man that simply cannot be explained in a sentence followed closely by Mark Watson, who produced an original and enjoyable show.

So as Adelaide prepares to get its boring on, remember that to sooth your withdrawal symptoms comedy happens all year round at everyone’s favourite Fringe venue, the Rhino Room. Maybe you’ll find the next big Fringe act on a cold Friday night in August and can add it to the ever-growing list for 2013. Let’s hope the world doesn’t end so we can do it all over again next year.
